This Government has returned substantial power to local people. Local councils are no longer the local arm of Whitehall. There’s never been a better time to be a councillor and there’s never been a time when you need to choose your councillor with greater care.
Local councillors have been freed from much of the red-tape which stopped them being real community leaders under Labour. You need to choose as your councillors those who are going to grab that chance to help shape our town positively and constructively. The Conservative councillors standing at this election are committed to our town and to taking a responsible view of our future.
At this election you will also be asked to vote as to whether you want to change the system for electing MPs. I urge you to vote NO. The system proposed – the Alternative Vote (AV) – is not a system of PR. It is wholly unfair and will end our tradition of elections based on one person, one vote. Instead, your MP could be decided by the votes of some of the most irrelevant and extremist parties in the country not by the majority of voters.
