Brian Triptree has been appointed the new Honorary President of Henley
Conservatives. A position previously held by long standing member Peter
Sutherland MBE who sadly died last year.

At the branch AGM last Friday, Peter Hopkins became the new Chairman,
replacing Cllr. Will Hamilton who had stood down as Chairman after a
successful three year term.

Brian Triptree and his family have lived in Henley for 41 years and he has been
a very loyal supporter of Henley Conservatives. Along with his wife Susan,
they have been instrumental in running many of the local party fundraising
events.

Peter Hopkins, a former London Borough Councillor and his family have lived
in Henley for 17 years, he is a Partner in a local Solicitor’s firm.

Cllr. David Nimmo -Smith, has been a County Councillor for 8 years, as
well as a Henley Town Councillor and former Mayor. He is a member of the
Townlands Steering Committee, Friends of Townlands and Governor of the
Henley College. He has been involved in all County aspects for Henley North
for many years. Given the ward changes, David is offering himself for re-
election for the whole of Henley, and hopes to continue his work on behalf of
our town at County Hall.

Commenting on the changes Will said: “It’s been a great honour to do my term
at the helm. We have brought on board an excellent new leadership team and
strengthened the committee to take us forward through the County elections this
year, the Town elections in 2015 and beyond.”

Peter commented: "I look forward to working with the new committee and in
particular the younger faces that have joined. In Cllr. David Nimmo-Smith,
we have an exceptionally experienced County candidate, who I know will do
absolutely everything he can for the people of Henley".

The Henley Branch AGM, held in the Kings Arms Barn last Friday was well
attended by members and friends of the party. Cllr. David Nimmo -Smith was
re-selected as the prospective County Councillor for the May County Council
elections. Cllr. Sam Evans remains Vice Chairman (membership), Cllr. David
Silvester – Treasurer and Leslie Plumb, Secretary.

If Cllr Hodgkin spent more time on the major issues affecting the town instead of trying to be everywhere and all things to all people, she might realise that the county council has a grant of 2.5 per cent and has had to make cuts of more than 15 per cent.

The total will be £115 million by 2014 and the council could just have easily cut funding to the library instead.

All areas have had to take their share, except the fire and rescue service as it’s vital and also children’s guardianship to prevent a Baby P case happening in Oxfordshire.

Cllr Hodgkin stated that I wished to see the Henley Youth Centre close. Total nonsense — I have been the one pressing for progress from the trustees in applying to the Big Society Fund.

It has taken well over six months to make any progress and while other youth services in Henley and the surrounding area have been successful, we now await to see whether there are any monies left in the pot.

Expenditure can only be matched by income unless Cllrs Hodgkin and Reissmann intend Henley to mimic Greece and Italy.

Why should the residents of Henley pay more to cover a rise in the mayor’s allowance? Other councillors have taken cuts in their allowances and a drop in mileage allowances.

If you want creative solutions for the youth of Henley, you need to make internal savings and that starts with the town hall.

Capital expenditure can only come from selling the family silver, the investments held, the income from which is a vital part of the finances of the town and trying to sell now in these perilous financial times is quite ridiculous.

I still await the date of the next value for money committee meeting which I regard as essential to keeping Henley’s finances in check.

Perhaps Cllr Reissmann will become more enthusiastic and show up for the next meeting when he realises that Henley needs to live within its means.

My new year’s forecast is that we will be having a similar conversation next year when the precept (your taxes) will have to rise by much more to cover the losses that will accrue from disastrous decisions taken by HRG while running this town council.

The Conservative candidates for both District and Town Council elections have been out in force this week, campaigning against the Alternative Vote option in Thursday’s referendum. In this photo they are joined by the Henley MP John Howell.

John Howell MP said: “Our democracy is built on a simple principle, one person, one vote and the right for that vote to be equal to all others. AV will put an end to this and that is why I am urging everybody in Henley to join me in voting No in the referendum on May 5th. AV is not going to fix our politics. In fact it will create a system which gives supporters of extreme parties such as the BNP multiple votes, while supporters of the mainstream parties will get only one way – how is that fair?”

Henley Conservatives have nominated a ‘full set’ of candidates with a strong team of sixteen Prospective Councilors – for the sixteen Town Council seats, and four Prospective Councilors for the four District Council seats in Henley.

In it’s quest for a majority at the Town Council, the party has drawn on the strength and depth of local residents in Henley, who care about the town’s future.

Will Hamilton, Chairman of Henley Conservatives commented, “Whilst we have a fantastic Conservative MP, Conservative controlled County and District Councils, some people will be surprised to know that we are currently not in majority at the Town Council level, nor ironically what the Town Council does.”
